Wo er anfangs noch Probleme hatte, als ernsthafter Tänzer anerkannt zu werden, schaffte er später den Durchbruch und galt seither als richtungsweisender Choreograf und Tänzer, von dem sich noch heute viele Choreografen und Künstler beeinflussen lassen. Die Filmemacherin Alla Kovgan zeichnet in ihrem Dokumentarfilm Cunninghams berufliches und privates Leben nach und erweckt mit moderner 3D-Technik sowie den letzten Mitgliedern der Merce-Cunningham-Dance-Company seine legendären Choreografien wieder zum Leben.
