Der Vorgänger zählte nicht nur zu den beliebtesten Soundtracks des Jahrzehnts, sondern auch zu den erfolgreichsten: In Deutschland inzwischen kurz vor Platinstatus, erstürmte Guardians Of The Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 1 vor zweieinhalb Jahren die internationalen Hitlisten und schaffte es hierzulande in die Top Ten der Albumcharts. Digital bereits erhältlich, erscheint der brandneue Soundtrack zum kommenden Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2-Spektakel einen Tag nach dem deutschen Kinostart auch physisch – und vereint dabei mal wieder etliche Sternstunden der Musikgeschichte. Kein Wunder: Schließlich spielt die Musik eine absolut zentrale Rolle in den unfassbar beliebten Marvel-Verfilmungen. Wie schon beim ersten Teil vereint das neue Album „durchweg Songs, die man kennt, oft gehört hat – obwohl man vielleicht nicht genau den Titel oder Interpreten weiß,“ wie Regisseur James Gunn schon über das Hit-Compilationalbum zu „Vol. 1“ sagte. Aufgrund des Erfolgs des Vorgängers, verfügte Gunn dieses Mal über mehr Budget – und konnte dementsprechend noch tiefer in die Classic-Song-Trickkiste greifen: von George Harrisons „My Sweet Lord“ bis zu Fleetwood Macs „The Chain“ (wobei sich laut US-Rolling Stone sämtliche Bandmitglieder die relevante Szene persönlich anschauten und erst dann ihre Freigabe erteilten) und „Mr. Blue Sky“ von ELO ist alles dabei, womit laut Aussage von Gunn „die abgefahrenste Szene vertont wird, die ich je gedreht habe. Es ist der perfekte Auftaktsong für diesen Film, weil er absolut ausgelassen ist, aber auch so ein düsteres Element hat“, wie er weiter gegenüber dem US-Magazin sagte. Außerdem habe er es abermals genossen, auch den einen anderen übersehenen Song zu integrieren – hier u.a. „Wham Bam Shang-A-Lang“ von One-Hit-Wonder Silver, die damit vor rund 40 Jahren kurz auf einer Erfolgswelle surften. Weitere Hits stammen u.a. von Sweet, Parliament, Sam Cooke und Cat Stevens.
